Description: The Access Services student worker assists the library patrons in usingthe library resources including the card catalog and databases, reserves, photocopiers and printers – key services that the library provides. The Circulation student assistant is an employee of the University of Colorado and represents the library to students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Access Services student assistant can work between 5 and 20 hours per week and will be trained extensively in their duties. Specific hours are decided by mutual agreement between the supervisor and the student when hired.
The Access Services student worker must provide excellent service to all library patrons in a pleasant positive manner. This position reports to the supervising staff in the Access Services department. The duties of the position include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

Building Maintenance

  • Assist with the opening and closing procedures for the Library
  • Know and follow established notification procedures for emergencies and fire drills
  • Report any physical building problems to appropriate supervisor
  • Know layout and locations of all offices and collections in the library building

Service Desk

  • Direct patrons to the proper department or reference librarian if appropriate
  • Answer phone courteously and transfer any calls when necessary
  • Check in/out books, other circulating materials including reserves
  • Operate cash register to receive money for fines, supplies and debit card use
  • Have a working knowledge of basic library resources (OPAC, Reference areas, online databases, print serials, permanent reserves, microforms, Special Collections)

Photocopying / Printers / PCs

  • Use copiers and microform machines so as to help patrons with questions and minor problems
  • Report computer, printer and copier malfunctions

Stack Maintenance

  • Shelve and shift books
  • Shelf read
  • Face shelves

Qualifications:

The ideal Access Services candidate is required to possess all of the following:

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to adhere to a work schedule
  • Dependability and the ability to be a self-motivated, independent and quick learner
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Professional and courteous manner with staff and other student assistants
  • Capability to work night and weekend hours

Wages:

This position starts at $9.00/hour and is work study only.

Students advance through the levels by demonstrating their mastery of the duties they perform, as enumerated on the skill list for their position and their attitude as evaluated by their supervisors. Formal evaluations occur annually.

Students who demonstrate exceptional skills and attitude may be promoted sooner than their annual evaluation at the discretion of their supervisors.

Monday     6 pm - Closing (start times are flexible)
Tuesday   6 pm - Closing (start times are flexible)
Wednesday   8 am - Noon (start times are flexible)
Wednesday   6 pm - Closing (start times are flexible)
Thursday   8 am - Noon (start times are flexible)
Friday   8 am - Noon (start times are flexible)
Saturday 12 pm - 6 pm, 2 pm - 6 pm
Sunday   12 pm - 8 pm, 2 pm - 8 pm
